Scholarship Application

Tailwinds of Hope offers six scholarships to students that are following their dreams. Four of the scholarships are for high school students that are pursuing a college degree or a trade school certification. We also offer a scholarship to an athlete at Adams State University in Alamosa, CO. We also provide a scholarship to future pilots that are enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Tailwinds of Hope wanted to create a scholarship for students in the state of Colorado that are pursuing their dream of being a commercial pilot in honor of Zachary’s love of flight in the state he grew up in. We wanted someone ni this beautiful state to have the opportunity that Zachary had in pursuing his dream of flight.

“Keep Pushing, Reach your set goals.”

“Follow Your Goals. Do not let anyone keep you from doing what you have determined to accomplish. There might be difficult times where you could think
about giving up, but just keep pushing and reach your set goals”. Zachary Capra. “Decide what you want, and then act as if it were impossible to fail.”
We are a foundation that will be awarding its first yearly aviation scholarship to financially support a deserving young person pursuing their Private Pilot Certificate.
Our goal, through our aviation scholarship, is to give them the opportunity to pursue their dreams of becoming a commercial pilot.
The minimum scholarship award is $2500 to cover the cost of obtaining a private pilot certificate.

Each year, the scholarship window will open on January 5th.

The deadline for applying is around the 4th of March of the same year. The scholarship will be awarded on April 4th. The Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the members of the board and judged on their merit. The board will come to a consensus and select a minimum of one recipient each year for the scholarship.

An annual Aviation Scholarship Winner will be awarded in the amount of $5,000 to those pursuing a career in aviation to support the dreams of hard-working compassionate and goal oriented young adults.

CONGRATULATIONS RYAN SMITH, DALLAS ROMAN, KRYSTI VEALS, LYLITH TURNER, CADE GLASS and HARRISON KESSLER!!!!

2025/2026 Embry Riddle Scholarship Recipient!

We are proud to announce the aviation scholarship established at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. The scholarship Winner, in the amount of $5,000 is presented to Harrison Kessler.  Harrison is approaching her senior year at Embry Riddle.

My name is Harrison Kessler, and I am student at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, majoring in Aviation and Aeronautical Science. I am writing to express my gratitude for the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. I believe this scholarship will significantly help me on my academic and career journey.
I grew up in a small town where the sky was always clear, and airplanes frequently flew overhead. From a young age, I was fascinated by flight and the mechanics behind it. This passion led me to pursue a degree in
Aeronautical Science. My goal is to become a skilled pilot and eventually work in the airlines. My academic journey so far has been both challenging and rewarding. Maintaining a GPA of 3.3 has required dedication and hard work, but it has all been worth it. The courses I have taken have deepened my understanding of aviation principles and have fueled my passion even more. However, the cost of education is high, and financial support is crucial for me to continue my studies without the added stress of financial burdens.
Receiving a scholarship would be a tremendous help in achieving my academic and career goals. It would allow me to focus more on my studies and less on the financial strain. I am committed to making the most of this opportunity by continuing to excel in my coursework and contributing positively to the aviation community.
I am deeply grateful to the donors for their generosity and support. This scholarship would not only ease my financial burden but also serve as a motivation to continue working hard and striving for excellence. Thank you for considering my application

2024-2025 Embry Riddle Scholarship Recipient!

I began flying in 2017 at the age of 12 and have been in love with aviation ever since. I always enjoyed flying to our vacations rather than the actual vacation, and so I knew from a very young age that my eyes would always be turned skyward. I transitioned this passion into flight training and solo flew for the first time at the age of 16. Then I got my private pilot license at 17, before continuing my training at Embry Riddle, where I am now a commercial pilot. Along the way, I have also dedicated myself to the community that I am apart of. I have joined various non-profits that seek to share aviation with the world, and I have been lucky enough to witness some incredibly inspiring moments throughout that time. Aviation is truly in my blood, and it is my intention to carry that forward for the rest of my life. One day, hopefully soon, I will be flying professionally at the airlines, fulfilling a lifelong dream of mine

______________________________________________________________

2023-2024 Embry Riddle Scholarship Recipient!

Firstly, thank you so much for your generosity. This scholarship not only provides funding for my final year at Embry Riddle, but it also allows me to focus more on enjoying my college years. Donors like yourself have made it possible to continue my studies. Attending Embry Riddle I have met the kindest people willing to lend advice. I am so happy to have expanded that circle now. Zachary Capra’s story is one that still influences Embry Riddle today. Since my first year at ERAU I have followed the legacy of Zachary through social media. He seemed like a fearless spirit and full of life.

After graduating I hope to become a flight instructor at Embry Riddle. Embry Riddle had the nicest training facilities and resources I have seen. This is something I hope to savor as I gain my hours. After reaching my ATP minimums, I plan to fly private jets for a few years before transitioning to the airlines.

Working at Gulfstream has definitely made me interested in corporate flying, but nothing beats the quality of life the airlines provide. Whichever route I decide to go, I know I will enjoy it. Flying has been my passion for some time now. Every time I start my engine, I think about the people that have helped me achieve my dreams, and this person is you.

Again, thank you so much for this award. This changes my situation significantly. I will be forever grateful.

______________________________________________________________

2022-2023 Embry Riddle Scholarship Recipient!

First, I would like to say thank you for the Zachary Capra Memorial Aviation Scholarship. Attending
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is one of the best decisions I have made for myself, and receiving
this award has only made that experience better. I am so humbled to be able to continue my education
here and have the financial load significantly lifted. When I first saw the award, a burst of excitement
and surprise ran through me, and I immediately knew I wanted to thank the people responsible for this
great gift.
Since I was a child, I was fascinated with outer space, aircraft, and Earth as a whole. Until I was around
15, I wanted to be an astronaut. However, as I got older, I started to question if becoming an astronaut
was simply a dream or a true career path for me. For my 16th birthday, I got to ride in a helicopter over
Niagara Falls. Being so high in the air and close to the clouds completely shifted my view of aviation, and
I soon became mesmerized by the thought of flying. The pilot of that helicopter told me that pilots are in
high demand and it is a very rewarding career path for those with an interest in aircraft and traveling.
Since those were two things that greatly interested me, I began to look at colleges that offered aviation
as a major. After a quick online search, I stumbled upon ERAU in Daytona Beach, Florida. I was instantly
in love with the campus and surrounding area. The following school year, I applied and got accepted to
the university. After beginning my major of Aeronautical Science in Fall 2020, I felt like I was starting a
new life and crafting my own future.
As of Summer 2022, I am now an Aeronautics major with minors in Aeronautical Studies, Applied
Meteorology, and Airline Operations, and I will graduate in Fall 2023. In short, I get to explore my
childhood passions in college.
You have greatly helped me on this journey by awarding me a donor scholarship, and I will forever be
thankful for you assisting me in achieving my dreams.

.

2020-2021 Embry Riddle Scholarship Recipient!

My name is Dallas Roman, and I am from Jacksonville, Florida. I am 19 years old and the first one in my
family to pursue a degree in aviation to become a pilot. I am currently enrolled as a sophomore at
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and in pursuit of my B.S in Aeronautical Science. During my first
year at Embry-Riddle I worked hard to get my private pilot’s license and now I am working on obtaining
my Instrument rating. Thanks to my grandparents living so far away, I have been pursuing the skies ever
since I was a kid. My dream has always been to fly across the globe and my goal is to become an
international commercial pilot. My favorite hobby is to take young people flying, to inspire them to want
to become a pilot and to hopefully one day train them at a school like Embry-Riddle. Soaring high in the
clouds is a beautiful feeling that cannot be matched.

Tailwinds of Hope is helping my college career and be closer to my dreams of being an airline pilot. I hope that i can express my gratitude toward you and all the foundation.

About Us

About Us

Our Story

Tailwinds of Hope Non Profit was created to honor the memory of Zachary Capra, a future commercial airline pilot. Zachary was killed April 4, 2018, when the small engine plane he was flying crashed just after takeoff in Daytona Beach, Florida while he was conducting his final check ride to obtain his commercial pilot’s license. On that clear morning, just shortly after takeoff, the left wing separated from the aircraft and crashed in an open field. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) examiner John Azma also perished in this crash.

Growing up Zachary was a devoted athlete, playing ice hockey, lacrosse and golf. Zachary served in the United States Navy from July 2012 through August 2016 serving four years aboard the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate conducting aircraft launch and recovery. Zachary completed 2 tours of the Persian Gulf. This is where Zachary decided to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot once his Navy commitment was complete. Zachary’s love of travel also began with the opportunities the Navy afforded him and planned to continue his travel experiences through his years as a pilot.

In August 2016, Zachary began his pursuit of becoming a commercial airline pilot and began his education at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Zachary was on the road to success when he was tragically killed on that April morning just one month shy of graduation. Zachary was awarded a posthumous degree of Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics. He was so close to accomplishing his dream and to solidify his future he had a short list of 2018 goals on his refrigerator which simply stated 1) Finish Commercial License 2) Finish Degree 3) Get a Job. All achievable goals. The Zachary Capra foundation awards an annual scholarships to aspiring pilots who share in his passion and are pursuing a career in aviation. Three additional scholarships are awarded to deserving high school students pursuing a four-year degree or attending a technical college. One scholarship is awarded to a deserving football player at Adams State University. All these scholarships are awarded in Zachary’s memory.

Zachary’s Legacy

“Keep pushing, reach your set goals.” – Zachary Capra

The Story of Captain Caps!

.There is a heartfelt reason behind the “Captain Caps” name used for Tailwinds of Hope events. Zachary Capra, a bright and passionate young man, was on his way to graduating from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in Aeronautics and a Commercial Pilot License Rating when his life was tragically cut short in a plane accident. Zachary’s lifelong dream was to become an airline captain. His last name, Capra, and the nickname “Cap” given by his friends and family, inspired him to create the social media name “Captain Caps.” To honor his memory, Zachary’s family chose to continue using the name “Captain Caps” for all events supporting Tailwinds of Hope. Through these events, Zachary’s love of aviation and his uplifting spirit live on, inspiring others to chase their dreams with the same passion and dedication he embodied.

Captain Caps Charity Golf Tournament Tailwinds of Hope - The Eight Annual Captain Caps Golf Tournament is set for August 7, 2026. See you next year!!

000 days 00 hours 00 minutes 00 seconds

Register here for the Golf Tournament

To all the great golfers and Sponsors that continue to support Tailwinds of Hope. The Sixth Annual Captain Caps Golf Tournament was a great success. Again, we had 216 golfers and 27 Sponsors that made this day so special. With the incredible turnout we will raise over $30,000 and so many more memories were made. With this amount of money, we have met our annual output for the scholarships that we provide to students. There will plenty of pictures to post when they are finished, to show what an incredible day everyone had. We should have a new scholarship recipient for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University soon.

Again, thank you so much for the support and friendships developed over the years.

Tailwinds of Hope – Zachary Michael Capra Foundation was started to honor our son Zachary Michael Capra. One of the primary scholarships established was to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the amount of $15,000. Our goal since the beginning was to endow the scholarship, something that we thought would take several years to accomplish. It was important to us that this scholarship would be available forever to continue to honor Zachary’s legacy and love of flying. We are so overwhelmed with emotions, in a short four years since starting the foundation we have met our goal to endow this scholarship. In December Tailwinds of Hope donated $45,000 to ERAU for the Zachary Capra Endowed Memorial Aviation Scholarship. We also donated another $15,000 to keep the current scholarship for one more year before the endowed scholarship begins.

We have an incredible donor base and so many families and friends that have enabled us to raise an incredible amount of funds. This shows what an incredible impression Zachary has made on all of us. Zachary touched so many lives in his short but impactful life. We all have stories that exemplify Zachary’s love, zest, and drive to live that life and continues to drive us to continue our mission to give back to the community. We are honored and humbled and filled with gratitude with the generous donations that have made this all possible.
